Big Fingermark Snapper on light tackle...

Date: 23-01-05    Time: 0130am.    Rod: Loomis n Franklin Classic 12ft.   Reel: Abu sport rocket 6500    Line: 20lbs mono.    Rig: Single hook short snood bottom feeder.    Bait: Cut squid.

After two night at the jetty without any catch, decide to go to this spot to try out. Reach there around 9pm n set up two rod with short snood single hook bottom feeder rig. Tide was already midway up n current was good. Around 1130pm, saw one rod tip have alittle rattle n decide to check. Wow! heavy at the end of the line n once in awhile it struggle abit. In my mind thinking it was a conger eel. But when i surface it. Ha..ha.. it was a big puffer fish about 3kg plus. It swallow my hook deeply n I can't unhook it. No choice, I released it along with the hook. By now the weather is getting cooler n windy. Thinking that tonight might not get any good fish , i already thought of packing up early. Then come 0130am. While looking up on my rod, suddenly i saw the rod on my right side bend down badly. I manage to grab hold of it before my reel alarm goes off. Strike! n yes. I can feel its something good there. This fellow move n turn fast. It take my light surf tackle to it maximum. After a few deep dive n fast turn, I manage to surface it. Yes, it the one that I have been targeting for a long time. Big fingermark snapper. It was too heavy for my rod to flip it up. So I tired it out n use my hand to pull it in with my main line. It weighs around 2kg plus n my personal record on fingermark snapper is still stand at 3kg.(See catch photo above)

Brown Dog Shark

Date: 17-06-2005   Time:10.45pm    Rod: SureCatch Pro Beach 13ft.    Reel: Penn 500L Jigmaster    Line: 30lbs mono   Rig: Single hook long snood bottom feeder.   Bait: Frozen squid     Hook: S/S Long shank 4/0

Check with the weather report and it was find at this place. Reach there around 7pm. It was already quite crowded there. Tide was about to full but current flow is slow. Set up to catch squid but none was on sight. Only set up one rod with a bottom feeder rig. Bait was frozen squid. Initial check on the bait show quite lasting. This type of sign show chances of hooking up a fish is great. When the tide turn down, current flow was good but still no sign of any squid. I decide to keep my kerozene lamp and concentrate on the fishing. Just change my bait and casted out. Suddenly saw my line gone loose. Strike and feel some struggle at the end of the line. Initial thought it was a marine cat fish. When it surface, it was a brown dog shark about near to two kilo. On seeing it not so big, I just use my rod to lift it up. Nothing happen after this and I packed up around 2am.

Small Brown Dog Shark Landed.

Date: 20/21-08-2005    Time: 12am plus   Rod: Loomis n Franklin Big Game 12ft..   Reel: Abu 7000 Red Classic   Line: 25lbs mono.  Rig: Long snood bottom feeder  Bait: Frozen Squid    Hook: S/S Long shank size 4/0.

Reach there around 8pm plus. Ron arrived soon. It was crowded n lucky we manage to find a place for our rods. Both of us set up two rod each. Ron used his spinning set with sarong as bait. Me two multiplyier set with frozen squid as bait. Tide coming up was slow n calm. No action from any of the angler there even until full tide. One thing good tonight is the bait is more lasting. A few time I wind back no need to change bait. I told ron we have great chance to hit something. Weather n water was a bid cold due to the afternoon rain. When tide turn down, the current move fast. Ron have to change his sinker to hold bottom. Around 12am plus, I saw my loomis big game rod tip has some rattle. Pickup n strike. Yes, something heavy on the line. In my mind thought it was a ACK. But wind back turn out to be a brown dog shark. Used my rod to lift it up as the water is high. The hook was deeply set so can't unhook it. Yeah! finally landed something. We continue to fish until 2am. But no more action n we packup.

Two Big Fingermark Snapper in one night outing.

The bigger one is 3kg and the other is 2kg. Very rare been able to caught this type of big size snapper from the shore.

When the fish is hungry, its really bite

Date: 11-02-05       Time: 8am to 1.30pm

Today is part of my long lunar new year holiday. With my buddy Chuan who is also on holiday, we headed down to bedok jetty. Today high tide is 3.3 meter around 12.35pm. The current flow was just perfect. After setting up our tackles, Chuan started to jig for live bait. Its not many but was easily caught. The first alarm goes off was my rod. At the end of the line is a small mackeral. I was quite surprise to caught this. Well maybe my luck. Then came the second strike. It a queenfish but I lost it near the water surface. Chuan reel start to scream. I strike n pass it to him. Its a big queenie. He fought well n bring it close, but we have no gaff. I lay down on the floor and try to grap the leader. Unfortunately the main line snap when the fish dive down. Too bad lost but at least we saw the fish. It really big. Estimate about 7kg base on it size. Then my turn. I landed a queenie. Not long after this another one about the same size also from me. Chuan pull up a palm size fingermark snapper on his handline. Then his reel alarm sounded. One queenie landed. He pull up a flathead on the handline again. Wow! super bite today. Before the tide turn, his alarm goes off again. Another queenie landed. Total ten fish strike but we landed seven. When the tide turn down, no more action and we decide to pack up.

A Hardworking Night Trip.

Date: 29/30-10-2005   Time: 1.40am    Rod: Loomis n Franklin Classic 12ft.    Reel: Abu 6500 sport rocket    Line: 20lbs mono   Rig: Single hook short snood bottom feeder.   Bait: Fresh squid     Hook: Beak size 3/0

The weather is perfect today without any rain. Water should be warm n very good for a night session of fishing as the full tide is also early. Decide to try out this area. Arrange with Ron to meet at "C" carpark around 7.15pm. I arrived early n start to set up all my tackles. After Ron arrived, we walk to the spot. There is another group of anglers fishing on our left side. Tide was already midway up but the current was slow. I immediately cast out my rods with fresh squid which I caught the night before on short snood bottom feeder rig. But soon we found out the bait was not lasting. We have to rebait it very often.

Around 9pm. The group on the left caught a barramundi about 3kg with live prawn. It show the bite time has started. We quickly change our baits. Half n hour later they got another strike. This time a 3kg kaci landed. Wow! fishes is all on their side. Twenty minute later, another hookup, with some hard fight, they caught another kaci about 2kg. Ho.. ho.. how lucky they are. We are 3-0 down.(Sorry don't have their catch photos)

We never gave up. Infact we reduce the bait changing time to every ten minute. The group left around 1am after their successful haul. I then move one of my rod to their position. Haha.. after two bait change, I finally saw this rod shaking on a far distance away. Quickly I rush there. The line already slack n flow along with the down stream. Pickup n strike, Yes! heavy at the end. Wind in and a fingermark snapper appear on the water surface. Yahoo! I did it. This gave us a comfidence boost. All rods were rebait with fresh bait again. 2am. Ron 11ft Loomis rod bell start ringing. He strike. We thought it was a fingermark snapper but when it was landed, it turn out to be a nice travelly. Wow! Travelly at night? Rare isn't it. Haha.. anyway our hardwork paid off. We just lost to them by a small margin. We stop when the tide die down around 3am.

6kg Wild Barramundi

Rod: Asahi Powercast 11ft.    Reel: Silstar AT80 Spinning.    Line: 30lbs mono.   Rig: Single hook short snood bottom feeder.   Bait: Dead night herring.

This super strong fighter was caught on a dead night herring as bait which it seldom took. Most of this fish prefer live bait.

Wolf Herring on Light Surf Tackle.

Date: 09-08-2004

After a night out trying on some rocky area with no result, decided this morning to go to bedok jetty for some wolf herring fishing as the last few days saw quite a number of it has been landed by other angler. As the size of the fish was not big, so decide to fish it with my light tackle. After casting the line with a plain sinker to about 50 meter out, I quickly hook on a live tamban on  two size 1 hook tie two inches apart to a one meter long leader line and clip onto my main line by a snap swivel and slide it down into the water. This method will keep the live bait at mid water to target fishes like wolf herring and queenfish. By now, a few small queenie n wolf herring are already landed by other angler either using float or the same method as me. After a few bait change, my luck come. There are a few nod on my rod tip and I strike. Yes, a small wolf herring can see jumping off the sea surface. With a few more acrobatic jump and some struggling, I manage to bring it close and flip it up with my rod. It weighed near to a kilo.(See catch photo on the right)

The Big Conger Eel.

Date: 06-06-2004 Early morning.

Went to bedok jetty to collect some bait until midnight. As the tide  turn down, it had very strong current flow. Armed with fresh baits, I decided not to fish there and headed to a spot which I had long not visited. Upon reaching, there were some anglers around and I quickly casted out two rods as the tide is going down fast and time was scarce. Fifteen minutes later, I saw my second rod tip rattle and the line has gone loose. I picked up and striked. Yes! It was heavy at the end of the line and I knew I had a hook-up but I was still unsure of its type. The current was very strong and it swept my fish towards my left. When surface, I saw that it was a big conger eel and was unable to lift it up with my rod. An angler there come to my help by holding on to my rod. I managed to grab hold of my leader and brought it up as the water was still high. It weighed 3.5kg when landed. It was quite a surprising event  to the other anglers there as they have not seen such a big fish caught at that place before. Around 4am, lightning started and I decided to pack up. (See picture on the left)

Big Brown Stingray

Rod: Surecatch Thunder rod 12ft.    Reel: Daiwa LD 50     Line: 30lbs mono     Rig. Single hook Pulley rig.     Bait: Cut frozen squid.

This 15kg stingray was caught at a east coast breakwater stone. It took a cut frozen squid on a single hook bottom feeder rig. Rod is a 12ft Surecatch thunder rod. Reel is a Daiwa LD50 fill with 30lbs mono line. It took the squid bait immediately after I casted out. Fought for about 20 minutes before able to land it.

A straighten hook and a unexpected dog shark.

Date: 09-10-2005   Time: 03.45am    Rod: Loomis n Franklin Big Game 12ft.    Reel: Abu 7000 Red Classic    Line: 25lbs mono   Rig: Single hook short snood bottom feeder.   Bait: Fresh cuttlefish     Hook: S/S Long shank 4/0.

As tonight the uptide was only start around 9pm, so I decided to go bjt to get some fresh bait in the early of the night. Ron join me alittle later. Our plan was to wait for the water to rise. We manage to have some baits n we move off around 10.20pm.
Reach our location about 10.50pm. Water was still quite low n current was almost dead. Set up our tackles n casted out. Bait was quite lasting as after some initial check n still fully intact. Didn't expect much as the current was not moving. We just sit down n chit chat waiting for action.
Full tide was around 0250am n it started to turn down. We heard Ron loomis rod the bell has a little tingling. Ron rush up to grab his rod. Suddenly the rod bend n Ron got problem of plucking the rod from the stand. His reel start sreeching... zeer...zeer... I went to help n Ron manage to took out his rod. He gave a hard strike with the rod fully bend. Wow! the fish was big... I was thinking he hook on a ray. Then the fish move. Ron do some good pumping on the rod n manage to take control. It start to move downtide along with the current. After some hard pump n puff, the fish was bring nearer to the shore. I was thinking of whether to get a gaff. Suddenly it made a very deep dive n its gone. We thought the hook snood break but it turn out to be his carbon hook straighten. Phew! what a waste. It could be Ron record catch from the shore.
Ron change a new set of terminal tackle n re casted out. Nothing happen after this n we decide to fish until 0430am. But the sky started to change around 0345am with some lightning n rain cloud was gathering. We decide to cut short n packup. When I went to wind back my last loomis rod, I notice my line has move slightly downtide. I pump the rod a feel quite heavy. My rod has to fully bend to bring in the weight. It something unusual. Feel nothing only heavy. Thought must be hookup a big plastic bag fill with water. When my rig surface, it turn out to be a small plastic n a dog shark at the end of the line. Haha.....what a unexpected catch. It weigh about 2kg plus.

3kg Long Tail Brown Stingray

Date: 17-04-2005    Time: 0215hrs    Rod: Penn Powergraph Surf 12ft.    Reel: Penn Jigmaster 500L    Line: 30lbs mono.   Rig: Single hook long snood bottom feeder     Hook: Long Shank size 4/0     Bait: Cut frozen squid.

A down pour rain in the late evening make me cancel my trip to a spot for targeting snapper. So decide to go to bedok jetty to joint my friend there for some leisure fishing. Tide was turning up but current was slow when I reach there. Setting up only one rod as there are quite crowded. Bait initialy was fast disappear but turn lasting when the tide is higher. Around 2am plus, tide was almost full and started to change direction. This down tide has a better current flow and I decide to continue fish on it even now is into the very early morning. After changing my bait, I was abit tired and decide to tie up a hammock to have some rest. Its not long after I was lying in my hammock that my reel alarm when off. Quickly get up and strike. Yes, I can feel a stingray at the end of the line and is not very big. But awhile later a splash on the water surface confuse me. It make me feel that it may not be a stingray and something else. I started to be more careful as I don't want a night cobia charging at my direction and caught me off guard as the vision at the sea surface was poor. Luckily its was this stingray surface rapidly due to the current flow and make the splash at the water. I easily bring it close and my friend was already there with the gaff. Its hit the scale at 3kg after landed.

20kg Cobia landed at Bedok Jetty.

Rod: Penn Slammer 11.6ft    Reel: Penn 25GLS     Line: 30lbs mono.   Rig: Single hook long snood bottom feeder.    Bait: Cut belt fish

This is still up- to- date the biggest cobia ever landed there. There are some bigger ever hookup but end up burst line. It not easy to land one as they are very powerful and fast speed fighter.

2kg plus Long Tail Brown Stingray landed

Date: 30-04-2005    Time: 0100am   Rod: Penn Powergraph Surf 12ft.   Reel: Penn 500L Jigmaster    Line: 30lbs mono.  Rig: Single hook long snood bottom feeder.  Bait: Cut frozen squid    Hook: Long shank size 4/0

Reach location around 8.30pm and the tide was at it lowest. The sea is very choppy with surface strong wind blowing endlessly. I don't harbour any high hope of catching something under this type of sea condition. Even the squid was hardly found under my kerozene lamp. Infact I was thinking of early calling it off if not to accompany my friend who is there and the everlasting bait that have casted out.  But luck was on my side when my reel alarm went off slowly around 0100am. I quickly strike and it was on. But because of waiting for my friend to wind up one rod which is nearby to avoid entanglement, this fish took the opportunity to rest on the sea bed. No choice, I have to play cool and wait for it to move by putting pressure on it with my rod. After not long, it gave way and I make a few pump on my rod to bring it to the surface. Its not very big so I get my buddy to hold onto my rod and I gaff it up. It was a male stingray with two spike and weigh about 2kg plus.
